Last Friday, Gateway Casino and Entertainment resumed operations at one of its Ontario land facilities as part of a phased resumption plan. On Friday, the company resumed operations at Gateway Casino Sudbury after a serious cyber attack on its IT system. Meanwhile, Thunder Bay's game site also restarted around the same time.
Gateway Casino and Entertainment, one of the nation's largest offline gaming facility operators, operates a total of 29 sites in British Columbia and Ontario, with two more in Alberta. In addition to providing premium gambling entertainment, operations also contribute to the economy of the host community, while providing work to more than 7,000 people.
Gateway Casino Sudbury and Gateway Casino Thunder Bay resumed operations on Friday, May 5, 2023, and are currently open for customers. On Friday, guests were able to enjoy slots and limited food and drinks. But on Saturday, both casinos began offering full service, and table games and other amenities resumed work.
On April 16, 2023, the operator notified that it would close all 14 gaming venues in Ontario after experiencing a cybersecurity incident. However, even after reopening most properties in the province, Unipolar 1090 - which represents union employees at Casino Lamar - recently shared a warning about a possible personal data leak.
In a recent memo, the union said it wanted to make sure that the operator took appropriate measures to protect its members from violations, regardless of whether information was leaked or not. The company restarted, saying it would continue to cancel shifts until the system was restored and operational.
In a press release last week, it said it is working with third-party experts 24/7 to determine whether personal information is leaked. It also said the cyber incident has now been reported to relevant privacy officials, law enforcement and government regulators and will continue to provide updates on the matter.
In early April 2023, Gateway Casino and entertainment announced that the My Club Rewards loyalty program had been renewed across the Ontario gaming facility. With the new program, players can now play in casino llamas near Orilia, earn points from operators' properties and redeem them in exchange for numerous first-rate rewards.
