"I've only imagined something like this, but my heart is really hot and I think I achieved something just by cheering."

Baek Seung-joo, head coach of Suwon Samsung U-18 (Mattango), who won his first title at the "Ground. NK League U-18 Championship," which marks his ninth anniversary this year, said with emotion.

The "2023 GROUND.NK League Championship" hosted by the Korea Professional Football Federation ended on the 28th, and the U-17 and U-18 champions were Jeonbuk Hyundai U-18 (Yeongsaeng High School), and both teams lifted their first trophy.

In the finals of the day, a rare scenery that had not been seen before was produced. The U-18 final drew attention as a 'mini super match' between Maetango and FC Seoul U-18 (Osango). Super Match is a derby that boasts history and tradition in professional soccer. When the brothers met in the finals, supporters from both teams filled one corner of the stadium despite the weekday.

There was a cheering match before the game. Players warming up prepared for the game with support on their backs. As the match started, the cheering grew louder. It was like a 'super match' in professional football.

Even the officials at the scene were surprised. An official from the federation said, "It's just amazing that so many people came. It seems like it would be fun just to hear the cheering.” Parents also sang cheering songs along with the supporters. It was a scene rarely seen in youth championships.

The highlight was after the net was shaken. It was Maetango who broke the 0-0 balance. In the 28th minute of the second half, Kim Seong-joo tried to drive the ball into the penalty box, but was stepped on by Min Ji-hoon of Osan High School and drew a foul. The referee declared a penalty kick (PK), and in the 30th minute of the second half Kim Sung-joo, who took the kicker himself, calmly split the goal.

Kim Sung-joo, who scored the opening goal, immediately ran to the supporters. Then he pointed to the emblem and held a ceremony with loud cheers. After the game, Kim Seong-ju said, “I was determined to run to the fans who cheered me on when I scored. After he scored, his body moved automatically.” At the same time, he said, “Thank you to the fans who made the final feel like a final. It was difficult, but hearing the cheers made me run more, and I just thought I had to win,” he said, expressing his gratitude.

Director Baek also said, “When I go to Big Bird, my heart gets hot. One of the reasons is the support of the fans. I've only been imagining things like this, but today my heart is really hot and I feel like I've achieved something just by cheering. Thanks to the support of the fans, we were able to win. I am so grateful,” he expressed his heart.

The youth championship is establishing itself as the best youth competition in Korea by making various attempts to develop the skills of youth players. The passion of fans also contributed to this, such as ▲ providing video analysis data for all games ▲ hosting night games ▲ implementing cooling brakes.
