Australia's head coach Dave Nielsen looks at the field during the baseball match between Australia and South Korea at the 2023 Asia Professional Baseball Championship (APBC) at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan, on Nov. 16.

Australia head coach Dave Nielsen was left disappointed after his side lost to South Korea in their first game of the 2023 Asia-Pacific Baseball Championship (APBC).

Australia lost 2-3 in 10 extra innings against South Korea in the first game of the tournament's preliminary round at the Tokyo Dome in Japan on Saturday.

"The guys worked hard, we had a lot of chances, but we just couldn't capitalize," Nielsen said in his post-match press conference, "and in the end, Korea had the last chance."

"Both teams played well, but we are disappointed with the result," he said, "especially after the eighth inning, which really hurt us."

"The younger players will have gained a lot of experience from today's game. There were a lot of tough situations and they overcame them," he said.

Australia took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning, but tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Kim Joo-won. In the top of the 10th inning of extra innings, they were unable to capitalize on well-hit balls with runners on first and second, and lost the game in the bottom of the 10th inning when Noh Si-hwan hit the winning run.

"We had the leadoff hit, so they had the advantage," Nielsen said of the overtime situation. In that situation, we didn't think it was enough to score one run, so we went for a hard hit rather than a bunt."

After dropping the first game, Australia will play the second game on Sunday against Chinese Taipei. A loss would effectively eliminate them from the final.

"I'm sure the pitchers will pitch well against Taiwan, just like they did today," Nielsen said. "If we throw a lot of strikes like we did today, we'll have a good chance."

"I had a good swing and I was happy to get a home run, but I was disappointed that we lost the game in the end," said Australia's Alex Hall, who hit a solo home run off Moon Dong-joo in the top of the sixth inning.

"But the pitchers did a great job today. If we keep doing what we did today, we'll be able to win the rest of the games." 19가이드03
