Casino Woodbine recently laid off nearly 1,000 employees within days of voting in favor of rejecting the contract proposal. Employees were announced by the Canadian Public Services Alliance and were locked out at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, May 8, 2023. Because of this, union workers are currently holding pickets in front of the game room.

Casino Woodbine, located at 555 Rexdale Blvd., Etobycock, ONM9W 5L1, offers over 3000 slot machines and virtual game tables for baccarat, roulette, blackjack, Cisco and more. It is owned by Woodbine Entertainment Group, Ontario Lottery and gaming company, Great Canadian Entertainment, Brookfield Business Partner LP and one Toronto Gaming.

Workers closed after rejecting the latest terms offered by One Toronto Gaming last week. Theo Lagakos, regional chairman of PSAC DCL 533 Casino Woodbine, believes it is one of the main reasons why no agreement has been reached due to concerns about the rights of part-time workers. He explained that 945 union members filled many jobs at the property, including dealers, cleaners and cashiers.

In addition, Mr Lagakos said 50% of casino workers were part-time, and for some time workers have sought to have three-day, three-week shifts as a way to maintain living standards. However, he said the employer didn't budge. He argued that employers do not guarantee working hours, which is a problem for the people.

Currently, it is not known how much the lockout has affected casino operations. However, Mr Lagakos said negotiations would continue depending on the employer because the company decided to lay off its employees. He added that unions will have to wait for employers to change their minds and come to the negotiating table so that they can resume dialogue and potentially reach an agreement.

This is not the first time casino employees have gone on strike. In the summer of 2022, employees represented by Unipo Local 1090 and Great Canada Entertainment failed to reach an agreement on a new collective contract. This led to the formation of picket lines, which prevented access to game facilities at all six entrances.

Recently, casino woodbine has also been embroiled in controversy as Ontario police arrested individuals who colluded with table game vendors. The OPP said five people were arrested for colluding with a table game dealer working at Woodbine Casino. The gambling employee in question was Arthur Segovia, 52, of Etobico.

He was charged with criminal malpractice, mischief fraud, theft of CA$5,000 or more, and fraud of CA$5,000 or more. At the same time, authorities say all five of the perpetrators are now released from custody and are waiting to appear in court in the near future. Meanwhile, the investigation is still ongoing.
