It was an expected trip to the minors. David Buchanan, 35, a right-handed pitcher for the Samsung Lions of the KBO League, was removed from the Philadelphia Phillies' opening list.

Philadelphia sent seven players to the minor league camp on the 23rd (Korea time), including pitcher Buchanan, infielder and outfielder Scott Kingery, outfielder David Dahl, Jordan Luplow, Carl Stevenson, catcher Cam Gallagher and Aramis Garcia.

The Philadelphia Phillies, which started reorganizing its roster ahead of the opening of the regular season against the Atlanta Braves on Monday, excluded Buchanan as expected. Buchanan, who joined spring training as an invited player after signing a minor contract, needed to make a strong impression in the exhibition game, but it didn't go as planned.

He appeared in a total of four games, two as a starter in exhibition games and two as a relief pitcher, but had a 5.63 ERA. He allowed 13 hits and three walks in eight innings. He had 12 strikeouts, but it was difficult to make the opening roster with a WHIP of 2.00 and a batting average of 377.

Buchanan, who took his first exhibition game as a starter against the Boston Red Sox on the 27th of last month, got off to a shaky start with four hits, one walk, two strikeouts and two runs in two innings. Then, he started again against the Minnesota Twins on the 3rd and improved slightly with two hits, one walk, three strikeouts and one run in two innings, but against the Toronto Blue Jays on the 10th, he pitched as a relief pitcher and pitched well with two runs in two innings of ⅔, six hits, one walk, four strikeouts and two runs.

He pitched as a relief pitcher against the Detroit Tigers on the 20th and pitched well with one hit, three strikeouts and no outs in one inning, but it was not enough to reverse the evaluation. As a result, Buchanan will start the season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs under Philadelphia.

It was a challenging competition from the start. The Philadelphia Phillies have a solid rotation of five starters, namely Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suarez, Taijuan Walker, and Christopher Sanchez. Other pitchers have joined Major League contracts as alternative starters, including Spencer Turnbull (annually $2 million) and Colby Allard (annually $1 million).

Allard had one win, a 3.18 ERA and six strikeouts in three exhibition games (two starts, five ⅔ innings), but he went down to Triple-A through a minor option due to the team's abundant starting resources. Buchanan was forced to go down to minor relegation as the long relief position also fell to turnbull.

As a result, Buchanan's departure from Korea appears to have been a handshake for Buchanan. Buchanan pitched 699 innings in a total of 113 games for Korea over the four years from 2020 to last year, with a 54-28 record, 3.02 ERA and 539 strikeouts. During this time, he achieved the highest level of performance with the most innings in the KBO league, and finished tied for first in multiple wins, most quality starts (80), and second in the ERA and strikeouts category.

As an ace player, he has become a model for younger players with his extraordinary desire to win and self-management. After the end of last year's season, Samsung offered Buchanan a two-year contract. Although he received harsh treatment in the KBO League, which has yet to formalize a multi-year contract with a foreign player, his financial position did not make sense.
