Asian Games men's soccer team returns home with gold South Korea's men's soccer team, which won its third consecutive men's soccer title at the Hangzhou Asian Games, is pictured with its gold medal around its neck after arriving at the arrival hall at Incheon International Airport on Monday. South Korea became the first team in Asian Games men's soccer history to win three consecutive titles after coming from behind to beat Japan 2-1 in the final the previous day.

"The joy of winning is only for today."

"It's not the end," said Hwang Sun-hong, coach of South Korea's men's soccer team, who beat arch-rivals Japan in the men's soccer final at the Hangzhou Asian Games on Sunday to win their third consecutive title at the tournament. "Tomorrow we will be craving for something. From tomorrow, we have to prepare for the Olympic qualifiers." Hwang is also the head coach of South Korea's soccer team for next year's Olympic Games in Paris.

Earlier in the day, South Korea won its third consecutive title with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Japan in the final for the second straight tournament. It was the first time in the history of men's soccer at the Asian Games that South Korea won three consecutive titles. They also increased their tally of Asian Games titles to six.

Korea's defense was solid in the seven games leading up to the final against Japan, scoring 27 goals and conceding just three. Eleven out of 19 players, including three goalkeepers, found the back of the net in the tournament. In the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang tournament, which Son Heung-min played in, the team scored 19 goals and conceded seven.

However, before the start of the tournament, expectations and interest in Hwang Sun-hong-ho had dropped from the Asian Games team five years ago. That's because of their poor performance. South Korea lost 0-3 to Japan in the quarterfinals of the U23 Asian Cup last June. At the time, Japan was focused on the Paris Olympics and fielded a team of 21-year-olds, two years younger than the qualifying age, and South Korea suffered a three-goal defeat. The loss prompted Hwang to apologize, saying, "I apologize for the disappointment I caused to the people." In June of this year, South Korea drew 1-1 in two friendlies against China, a team that is considered to be one step below them, and lost 0-2 in a U23 Asian Cup qualifier against Qatar in September.

"We spent a lot of time on defense," Hwang said of the Asian Games win. In the offensive line, the players have so many strong personalities that we didn't put them in a box and put together a puzzle according to them, and I think that was a factor in our success." Lee Kang-in said, "(The team) was criticized by many people before the tournament, but the coach believed in the players and we believed in the coach." 스포츠토토맨
