Canadian company Gateway Casino & Entertainment announced Wednesday that it will invest CA$36 million in a new casino facility in Chatham. Cascade Casino Chatham, expected to open in mid-2019, will replace existing Dresden slot facilities and create up to 200 jobs in the region.
During a presentation in Chatham, Ontario on Wednesday, CEO Tony Santo and Chatham Kent Mayor Randy Hope announced plans for a new gambling site to be built at 615 Richmond Street on the northeast corner of Richmond and Kale Drive. The private operator is planning a grand opening in the summer of 2019, and will begin construction of the 50,000-square-foot building in the coming months. Details of the casino came after the official announcement of the project earlier this month.
Cascade Brand Casino is Ontario's first newly constructed gateway gambling house, which has already acquired several facilities previously operated by the Ontario Lottery and Game Company (OLG). As part of OLG's huge modernization efforts, Gateway has been selected as a new service provider for several gambling venues across southwest Ontario, including London, Point Edward, Dresden and Hanover. Santo also said more facilities would open in the North Bay, Kenora and Collingwood areas in the future.
Initially, it was unclear whether Chathamkent's new project would replace Dresden's slot location, but officials said on Wednesday that the old slot location would be closed in 2020. But when Gateway starts hiring new Cascade casinos, employees will be a priority. Also, according to company representatives, up to 200 jobs will be created in the region, especially considering that this will be more than just a gaming facility.
Gateway's new casino will be built on the current vacant lot on the former wheel-in hotel site on the corner of Richmond Street and Kill Drive. The 50,000-square-foot site next to the John D. Bradley Convention Center will be an entertainment hub, not just a casino with food and beverage spaces separated from the game floor. The casino section has 333 slot machines and 10 games, almost twice the gaming space of Dresden.
Leading restaurant brands from Gateway, Match Eatery & Public House and Buffet will be added as dining options for casinos as well as sports bars. Nearly 100 employees from Dresden Slot venues will be offered jobs and up to 100 more jobs in the facilities' gaming and restaurant areas. The company's CEO Tony Santo also notes that the new, fairly large casino will boost the city's profits.
Currently, the Ontario Lottery and gaming company pays the city of Chathamkent a portion of its gambling proceeds worth about $700,000 each year. For Cascade Casino, this amount is expected to be more than $1 million. Construction must begin this summer for Gateway to open its casino .
