FC Seoul lost 0-2 to Gwangju FC in the first round of Hana Bank K League 1 2024 away match held at Gwangju Football Stadium on the 2nd.

The match drew attention as Kim Ki-dong of Seoul and Lee Jung-hyo of Gwangju, one of the best strategists in the K-League, had a showdown, but fans were not interested in him. Lingard joined Seoul ahead of this season.

Lingard, a former Manchester United player in the English Premier League, drew attention from local media in the UK as well as in Korea when he wore a Seoul uniform on the 8th of last month.

Coach Kim Ki-dong, who said Lingard's physical condition was not perfect during the opening media day and saw the possibility of playing in the opening game, raised fans' expectations by including him in the away game in Gwangju.

Lingard, who watched the game from the bench, finally made his K-League debut by stepping on the ground in the 31st minute of the second half when Seoul was losing 0-1. When Lingard played, all the spectators, regardless of home and away fans, cheered and took out his cell phone to capture him.

Lingard, who played in the match with many people's expectations, did not seem to be in perfect physical condition as manager Kim said. Lingard hit a left-footed shot right after the substitution, but the ball missed the goal far.

The cross from the right side was sharp in the 36th minute of the second half, but it did not lead to an attack point as Ilyuchenko's header was held by the goalkeeper.

Lingard also showed a rough appearance when the game did not go as he wanted. In the second half extra time, Lingard received a yellow card for attempting a dangerous tackle while blocking Gwangju's counterattack.

Later, when the referee stopped the game for a while and discussed the scene with the video reading room, Gwangju fans shouted "exit," but the game went on as it was, and Seoul, which did not get any results even with Lingard, dedicated an additional goal to Gabriel, losing 0-2.

As the game ended, British media also took Lingard's debut match in the K-League as interesting. Daily Mail and Mirror criticized Lingard's disappointing performance, calling it his debut match like a nightmare.

Meanwhile, Lingard will officially greet Seoul fans through the home opening match against Incheon on the 10th.
