Last month, Macau's average daily hotel occupancy rate rose 6.6% year-on-year to 91.6%, while the median price for three-star to five-star rooms fell 9.8% to around $150 a night.

The average daily hotel occupancy rate in November rose 3.5% month-on-month, with three-star hotels the highest at 96.5% - a 6.3% improvement from the same period last year, according to a report by the Macau Business Daily newspaper, citing official figures from the Macau government's tourism agency.

The average daily hotel occupancy rate in November was 93%, up 5.2% year-on-year, and five-star real estate rose 7.4% to 90.1%.

The latest figures bring the average daily hotel occupancy rate to 84.7% for the year to the end of November, an improvement of 1.6% year-on-year, and typical prices are down about 13% since the start.

The newspaper said the figures were based on information provided by 42 hotels and the Macau Hotel Association, with the average overnight stay at a three-star facility just over $105, down 17.7% from the previous year.

The president of the Macau Travel Industry Committee told Macau Business Daily that hotel occupancy is expected to remain at around 80% over the upcoming Christmas holiday, which is somewhat unchanged since 2015, despite currently offering around 4,700 more rooms thanks to the recent openings of Paris Macao and Win Palace Co-Tai.

Because Christmas is not an official holiday in China, Wu further predicted that most tourists traveling to Macau during the festival would be from Hong Kong, the former British colony, or from abroad, and that the number of visitors from the mainland would be relatively inconsistent.

A report by brokerage Sanford C Bernstein Limited reportedly explained that Macau casino operators will need to make more space to overcome future "bottles" that can be caused by increased demand on weekends and holidays.

With Macau's traditional VIP gambling market accounting for most of the weekly stays, most of the weekend rooms are now filled by popular market players.

The report by analysts Vitali Umanski, Zengong and Yang Shay said, "The junket business, which is currently a mix of almost all large interstate travelers, is dominated by holidaymakers, premium mass and VIP players." "Most of the current large market recovery has come from the weekend and public holiday economy.
