City Economy Minister Ray Ya-Nong (pictured) announced at an official press conference this morning that casinos could apply for a 30-day delay if they needed more time to prepare, but the temporary closure would not be extended.

Casinos may also be sanctioned if they are not fully operational by March 20, but they will be allowed to reduce their operations during these 30 days.

All casinos reopening must comply with a set of new conditions designed to prevent further spread of the coronavirus variant. This reportedly includes rules requiring all dealers to wear face masks, along with instructions to increase the distance between tables and conduct temperature checks on guests and staff.

The Macau government is also attempting to prevent the spread of the coronavirus variant, officially known as the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), by quarantining all casino workers entering the region from mainland China for 14 days. However, Ray reportedly detailed that while his department may try to change those requirements if the outbreak worsens, residents and tourists will not be subject to these conditions.

The correspondence, written by analysts Kelsey Zhu, Eunice Lee, and Vitaly Umansky, also reportedly declared that some casinos in their former Portuguese enclave had 'asked the government to continue the closure because business conditions were expected to be very low.'

"Even if casinos reopen, there will still be a shortage of customers. Most mainland Chinese customers will not be allowed to enter Macau until the suspension is lifted. At this time, there is nothing certain from the Chinese side when such travel will begin to be allowed."
