Hwang Sun-woo's Men's Medley Relay 800m Finishes '6th' in Final Race

The Korean swimming "golden generation" of Hwang Sun-woo (20), Kim Woo-min (22), Yang Jae-hoon (25-over Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province) and Lee Ho-joon (22-Daegu Metropolitan City) broke another Korean record in the final of the World Aquatics Championships.

South Korea finished sixth in the men's 800-meter freestyle relay final at the Fukuoka 2023 World Aquatics Championships at Marine Messe Fukuoka Hall in Fukuoka, Japan, on Monday, setting a new national record of 7:04.07. This is their best finish since finishing sixth in Budapest last year.

The 800-meter freestyle relay is an event in which four swimmers swim 200 meters of freestyle. Hwang Sun-woo was the first swimmer on the day and was in third place through the 100 meters in 51.35 seconds, dropping to sixth place between 100 and 150 meters before moving up to fifth place at the end, clocking 1:46.35.

Kim Woo-min then ran the 200 meters in 1:44.84 to stay in fifth place. The third youngster, Yang Jae-hoon, dropped to seventh place in the 200 meters with a time of 1:48.35. Lee 스포츠토토 completed the 200 meters in 1:44.53. He moved up to fifth place at the 150-meter mark, but faded in the final sprint to finish sixth.

Although South Korea was denied its first-ever team medal at the World Aquatics Championships, the country continued to break records in the preliminaries and finals. Earlier in the day in the preliminaries, the Koreans set a time of 7:06.82, and then nearly nine hours later in the final, they improved by a whopping 2.75 seconds, making it two Korean records in one day.

Great Britain won gold in 6:59.08, with the United States taking silver in 7:00.02 and Australia taking bronze in 7:02.13.

For South Korea, reaching the final is a big deal. For the first time in the history of Korean swimming, they have reached two consecutive World Aquatics Championships team finals in management events.

They are also the only Asian nation to qualify for the 800-meter freestyle relay final. In the preliminaries, Japan finished ninth and China 11th.

The outlook for the Hangzhou Asian Games in September is also bright. South Korea has yet to win a team gold medal in a business event at the Asian Games. The country's best team results at the Asian Games are a silver medal in the 800-meter freestyle relay at Hiroshima 1994 and a silver in the 400-meter medley relay at Guangzhou 2010. South Korea will be looking to win its first ever team gold medal in a business event at the Asian Games.
