Two Korean records in one day, 'golden generation of relays' born

Korea's "golden generation of men's swimming" broke the national record twice in one day.

The South Korean men's 800-meter freestyle relay team of Hwang Sun-woo, Kim Woo-min, Yang Jae-hoon and Lee Ho-joon finished sixth in the 800-meter medley relay final at the Fukuoka 2023 World Aquatics Championships at Fukuoka Marine Messe Fukuoka Hall in Fukuoka, Japan, on Monday with a time of 7:04.07. The South Koreans set a new national record of 7:06.82, beating their previous best of 7:06.82 by 2.75 seconds in less than half a day in the preliminary race.

Great Britain won the gold medal in 6:59.08, with the United States taking silver in 7:00.02 and Australia taking bronze in 7:02.13. The Koreans had an evenly matched performance, with only 0.21 seconds separating them from fourth-placed France (7:03.86), despite ace Hwang Sun-woo not being in top form. The leveling off of the athletes' performances means that Korea is getting closer and closer to the world level that seemed so far away.

South Korea had great swimmers like Cho Oh-ryun and Choi Yun-hee who dominated the Asian scene in the '70s and '80s, but they were not able to perform well on the world stage like the Olympics because of the 'Asian limitation'. However, in the late 2000s, a world-class swimming monster named Park Tae-hwan emerged, and South Korea became a country that could expect medals on the big stages of the World Championships and Olympics, and now Hwang Sun-woo has taken over Park's position as the ace of Korean swimming.

In fact, to date, Korea Swimming has won four medals at the Olympics (1 gold, 3 silver) and five medals at the World Aquatics Championships (2 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze). However, these were all won by the country's two "geniuses," Park Tae-hwan and Hwang Sun-woo, and since the mid-2000s, Korean swimming has been criticized for the gap in quality between Park and the rest of the team. In other words, it was hard to expect Park to do well in a relay event, where even Cheonha's Park can only be one of four swimmers.

But in the 2020s, with 200m freestyle bronze medalist Hwang Sun-woo at the helm, Korean swimming began to change. The South Korean 800-meter freestyle relay team of Hwang, Lee Ho-joon, Kim Woo-min, and Lee Yoo-yeon made their first-ever World Championships final at last year's World Championships in Budapest, finishing fourth overall in the preliminary race. The relay team finished sixth overall in the final, but set a new Korean record with a time of 7:06.93, showing the promise of a "golden generation" of Korean swimmers.

South Korea had a new team at this year's World Championships, with last year's members Hwang Sun-woo, Lee Ho-joon, and Kim Woo-min joined by Yang Jae-hoon as specialty relay runners. They were in fine form individually during the event, with Hwang winning bronze in the men's 200 meters and ninth in the 100 meters, Lee Ho-joon finishing sixth in the 200 meters, and Kim Woo-min finishing fifth in the 400 meters and setting a new Korean record in the 800 meters. It was also encouraging for the relay team that ace Hwang Sun-woo was given a day off on the 27th after missing out on the 100m final.

The Korean freestyle relay team raced in lane 2 of 6 in the preliminaries and finished third in lane 2 and sixth overall in 7:06.82, qualifying for their second consecutive final 먹튀검증 after last year's event in Budapest. They also set a new Korean record by 0.11 seconds, beating the previous record set in last year's final. South Korea was the only Asian nation to reach the final of the men's 800m freestyle relay, as host Japan finished ninth (7:08.70) and China 11th (7:09.99).

Korea's sixth-place finish in the preliminaries earned them lane seven in the final. Korea's ace Hwang Sun-woo, who started as the first runner, slowed down at the 100m mark and fell to the bottom of the field, but Kim Woo-min, who started as the second runner, improved his position with a good time of 1:44. The final runner, Lee Ho-joon, came from behind to post another good time of 1:44 and touch the touchpad in 6th place, 2.04 seconds ahead of 7th place Germany (7:06.14).

In the 800-meter freestyle relay, South Korea was relying heavily on 200-meter freestyle bronze medalist Hwang Sun-woo. They sent Hwang as the first swimmer, hoping that he would be able to overpower Kisun. However, Hwang was not at his best in the medley relay as he was exhausted after competing in the 200m and 100m freestyle back-to-back. Nevertheless, the South Korean swimmers put on a good show, breaking the Korean record twice during the day, indicating that they are developing their skills evenly.

Korea's time of 7:04.07 in the 800-meter freestyle relay was 4.63 seconds faster than 9th-place Japan's 7:08.70 and a whopping 5.92 seconds faster than 11th-place China's 7:09.99. Based on their performance at the World Championships, South Korea are the favorites to win gold in the men's 800m freestyle relay at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Let's hope that the golden generation of Korean swimmers will manage their physical condition for the rest of the year and perform at their best at the Asian Games.
